Many large marine vessels - including many cruise ships - use the Azipod electric propulsion. Cruise ships generate electricity using diesel-powered turbines that run at constant RPMs, which is claimed to save about 20% over burning diesel to turn the screws directly. As well, the Azipod is more flexible than a traditional drive - it can swivel, up to 360% in most configurations, to send the power in exactly the right direction.
